There are plenty of products available to help you regrow hair, and most of them are quite effective at strengthening weak hair, rebuilding hair follicles, and increasing the volume, thickness, and strength of thinning hair.
But beyond just applying these products and leaving them be, or following treatment regimens as labeled, there are many important differences between caring for a totally healthy head of hair, and caring for thinning hair, especially when you’re using different treatment devices.
Here’s a quick list of tips and advice that will surely be helpful to you as you try to regrow your thinning hair.
SHAMPOO AND CONDITION REGULARLY
Hair gets dirty. Thinning, fine hair gets dirty even faster than the hair of a person who has no thinning problems, so it’s important that, even if you have far less hair than you used to, you maintain a consistent and beneficial cleaning regimen.
These shampoos and conditioners can be either standard styles for all hair, or hair restoration products designed specifically for people with thinning hair.
As long as you’re consistent with your application and treatment, your hair will be healthier. Just remember to be gentle while applying these products, as thinning hair has a tendency towards breakage that is exacerbated by excess force.
DON’T OVERSTYLE YOUR HAIR
Thinning hair, especially hair that’s undergoing hair loss treatment, cannot handle the abuse that regular styling heaps upon it – curling, waving, blow dryers, flat irons and curling irons, and even normal hair styling products that contain heaps of harmful chemicals should be avoided when you’ve got thinning hair. Heat and chemicals damage your hair, and make it more likely that your hair treatments will be less effective.
This is not to say that you can’t style your hair at all, or that you have to avoid your preferred styles forever. But as long as you’re treating your hair, you want your treatments to be as effective as possible, and minimizing the deleterious, hair-damaging effects of the tools generally used to style hair is a good place to start.
UNDERSTAND THE LIMITATIONS OF TREATMENT
We won’t go into the full details about the hair growth cycle here, but there is one thing that’s important to mention. When a hair follicle is shut off due to natural aging or non-chemical induced hair loss, it cannot be brought back to life.
Some treatments promise this, but we’ve never found one that can actually deliver on its promise. It’s an unfortunate fact – these follicles will remain, forever inactive. But that’s not a bad thing, necessarily.
What this means is that you need to take action – once a follicle shuts off altogether, it will be permanently inactive. But until then, hair restoration treatments, follicle strengtheners, vitamins, and other treatments can have a huge impact when you treat your active hair follicles.
Because of this, it’s important to begin hair treatments early on in your balding stages. If you haven’t done this, you may maintain and keep your currently active follicles happy and healthy, but you will have trouble regrowing hair in spots where the follicles have already been deactivated.
COMBINE YOUR TREATMENTS
There are many kinds of treatments that can be used together for thinning hair, and these treatments often work far better together than they do alone. For example, taking a biotin vitamin while treating yourself with an at-home laser hair regrowth device, or using a follicle-strengthening shampoo and conditioner while using other treatment devices for hair growth.
Laser hair restoration devices especially are very safe to use with other methods of treatment, as they interact only with the hair follicle itself, and don’t have and contraindications or ill-effects when combined with other chemical, topical, and oral treatments.
Reviews of these devices often cite their usability with other treatments – one user in particular of a laser light device for hair growth mentioned using a topical treatment, a hair-restoration shampoo and conditioner, oral vitamins, and a combination of diet change and exercise to turbo-charge his hair restoration regimen to great success.
Hopefully these quick tips have given you a better idea of how to care for your hair during balding treatments, what treatments are effective, and how to shield your hair from harm while undergoing treatment to help restore your hair.
